Ben Koons from Dunedin is on track to become the first Male XC skier to represent New Zealand at the next olympics.
While battling illness Koons managed to get an 'A' standard t his opening race of the Northern Hemisphere season in Munio, Finland. His score of 99.61 was enough to drop him under the 100 point qualifying requirement. The qualifying score of 100 is set by the New Zealand

Mt Ruapehu's Turoa Ski field is claiming New Zealand's largest ever snow base with over 4.5 meters of snow on the ground. Whakapa Ski field, on the other side of Mt Ruapehu had also received good snow coverings with 350cm of snow on the ground which has been the biggest since 1995
